Sāmoan fa‘afafine non-binary poet and painter Dan Taulapapa McMullin will be creating an installation of paintings, prints and texts based on their artist book The Healer’s Wound: A Queer Theirstory of Polynesia (2022, 2nd edition 2024) which is a collage of historical texts and images with poetry. Publication is by Pu’uhonua Society (Native Books Arts&Letters) and Tropic Editions of Honolulu, art book curated by Drew Kahu’aina Broderick and edited by Marika Emi of Tropic Editions. While in residence they will be launching a new 2nd edition of the book with new archival material, poetry and art. During their residency Taulapapa will discuss their extensive research into Pacific texts in many Polynesian and colonial languages as well as image archives of Sāmoa, Hawai’i, Aotearoa, Tahiti, and throughout Polynesia. They will also engage with new work from the Pasifika community with Kanaka Maoli poet Kai Gaspar and Sāmoan playwright Kiki Rivera.
